I am sitting in front of the TV feeling numb about the Zimmerman trial. How could that jury find that monster not guilty? I feel anger. I feel sadness. I feel FEAR. I feel so sorry for the Martin family. As a parent the most horrifying thing that can happen to you is for your child to be harmed. Imagine allowing your teenager out to grab some tea and skittles. Imagine the nightmare of learning that your child was MURDERED by a predator that racially profiled him as a criminal. Imagine the HORROR of watching your judicial system fail your child and let that monster go free.

As I sit here and listen to the pundits discuss this case; I AM AFRAID. As an African-American woman I live in constant fear of this scenario happening to the men and boys in my life. I wonder if this is how my grandmother felt when she heard about Emmett Till being murdered. I wonder if this is how my parents felt when Rodney King’s attackers were found not guilty.

I am MAD! God, we prayed and hoped that we would see justice for young Trayvon Martin and his family. Where are you in the midst of this horrible case? I decided to goggle some biblical quotes on ANGER. I considered focusing on FEAR because I am actually very afraid but ANGER seems like the most adequate emotion.

Ecclesiastes 7:9 Be not hasty in your spirit to be angry: for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

There’s discussion about rioting and public uproar. I don’t really see this happening. I think we need to refocus our energies from anger to strategic outrage. We need to mobilize our collective voices. We need to hold our community and political leaders more accountable. We have to take our ANGER and RAGE and do something productive. We have to advocate for our children. Let’s be WISE as the bible instruct. This is not a time to be foolish!

God in the details is that although Trayvon Martin’s case was tragic it has opened up a wonderful discussion and opportunity for change. We have the country’s attention. WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO NOW? Let’s rid our hearts of blinding rage and do something meaningful to pay tribute to the legacy of Trayvon Martin and all the children who have died of violence.

Are we going to live in ANGER or are we going to make a difference?

Change starts with one person and that person could be you.

May GOD BLESS TRAYVON MARTIN’S FAMILY!
