The oh so prettiful actress Ruby Dee passed away on Wednesday night at 91 years old after living a life full of accomplishments and activism. Ruby Dee came of age in a country that was very hostile and limited for women and minorities. As a woman of color Ruby Dee lifted the ceiling for women in the entertainment industry. She opened doors and showed the world the how PRETTY and WONDERFUL black women could be if given the opportunity to BE!
I am sad to hear about her sudden passing; upon the heels of losing Maya Angelou it just feels too soon to lose another iconic girl. Her daughter Nora Davis Day told The Associated Press on Thursday that her mother died at home at New Rochelle, N.Y., on Wednesday night. Ruby Dee was surrounded by family and friends as she exited out of this world and on to the next.
Ruby Dee had a very long career in the entertainment business. She frequently acted alongside her husband the late great Ossie Davis. In addition to being a fixture in American cinema she was nominated for an Oscar at the tender age of 83 for best supporting actress for her role in the 2007 film American Gangster. She also won an Emmy and was nominated for several others. Ruby Dee did not let age or the loss of her beloved husband slow her down.
Nora Davis Day declined to answer any questions before releasing a formal statement.
